I am so excited. A group of fellow Ravelers have started a competition over the next year based on Project Runway called Project Yarnway. Participants have to submit projects for 5 different challenges throughout the year to be eligible for the final challenge and we have our own Tim Gunn analog.

I just completed and submitted my design for the first challenge – to show my design sensibility and use only materials and tools available in my stash.

I designed a pair of socks based on my Labyrinth Shawl.
Here’s the diagram

From project yarnway

and here’s a picture of one of the finished socks

From project yarnway

The socks are made of Regia Hand Dye Effect sock yarn and were knit on size zero dpn’s.
Here’s my designer statement blurb
These represent me as a designer, because my first love is unusual but easy construction and my second love is socks. These socks are knit as a winding back and forth path that winds its way around the ankle to create a sock cuff. It is then worked back and forth across the foot with the only true work in the round is on the toe and only the toe grafting to finish up. All other edges are finished as you go.

Thanks to everyone who purchased one of my patterns during the Help for Haiti Fundraiser on Ravelry. I donated a total of $25.00 to Doctors without Borders for their work in Haiti. The amazing thing to me is that the majority of the funds raised came from sales of my Labyrinth Shawl pattern that w as just released. I have emailed my total to the Yarn Harlot (www.yarnharlot.ca) to be added to the grand tally.

My Labyrinth Shawl is now available as a Ravelry Download. If you would like to buy a hard copy of the pattern instead it is being distributed by Clever Yarn Imports (www.cleveryarn.com).

Reminiscent of a Labyrinth Maze, the Labyrinth Shawl is knit in one continuous piece joined as you go. Starting in the center and twisting and turning until you reach the end of the path.

The Labyrinth Shawl is worked on only 14 stitches at a time with 4 different segments in this pattern: The lace starting/ending segment, the straight segment, a right turn segment and a left turn segment. Joining your edges as you go means no finishing when you are done.

Techniques used: Knit (k), knit two together (k2tog), slip 1 with yarn in front, yarn over, long-tail cast-on, 3 needle bind off.

Other supplies: tapestry needle, scissors, blocking wires and pins (or other blocking supplies)

Don’t forget that through Feb 14. 2010 a portion of the proceeds from each pattern sold ($3.00 for the Labyrinth Shawl) will be given to Doctors without Borders for the Help for Haiti campaign on Ravelry(www.ravelry.com).

Here’s the blurb from Ravelry

A quick, fun and easy cat toy pattern, that can’t be resisted. A portion of each sale goes to Town Lake Animal Shelter in Austin, TX.

Techniques Used: knit, purl, knit 2 together, make 1, yarn over; slip, slip, knit slipped stitches together; e-wrap cast on, bind off, your favorite cast on.

Approximate yardages:
Land Shark – 40 yards worsted weight yarn
Red fish/Blue fish – 15 yards worsted weight yarn in color A(Red) and 8 yards fun fur (or worsted weight yarn) in color B(Blue)
Snack Attack – 18 yards of worsted weight yarn.
